Classical Approach

  • The curriculum follows the “Grammar” stage of classical education, where students build broad foundational knowledge.

  • Focus areas include phonics, spelling, handwriting, reading, grammar, and mathematics tailored to developmental stages.

  • History and literacy are introduced through chronological world and American history frameworks and culturally rich texts.

Curriculum Components

  • Reading and Literature: Students engage with age-appropriate books selected for literary and cultural value (e.g., Owl at Home, Frog and Toad, The Velveteen Rabbit).

  • Mathematics: Often based on Singapore Math, which emphasizes concrete understanding and problem solving.

  • Languages: Elementary students typically study a modern language (e.g., Spanish) or begin exposure to classical languages (Latin).

  • Arts and Music: The curriculum includes studio art and music, reinforcing cultural literacy and creativity.

Instructional Model

  • Many lower-school classrooms use a two-teacher model (a lead teacher plus an assistant) to provide personalized support and maintain classroom order conducive to learning.

  • Great Hearts emphasizes calm, orderly classrooms with routines that help students focus on study and character development.

Virtue and Character Development

  • While not employing a separate “character curriculum,” the school culture is designed to form moral and intellectual character through dialogue, example, and community norms. The Socratic method and classical texts play a key role in shaping student thinking and behavior.
